Eleven Years’ Progress

I had a recent comment asking what I was up to when blogging back in 2003. I had some bonsai back then but I was worrying mainly about remodeling my house. But, some of the photos from my 2003 blog are the only photos that I have remaining after a computer crash in 2005 that was never recovered. Before that I was also largely using a film camera so many of the images are not digitized.

How many trees do I have that I had in 2003? At the times I had a small bench that had some trees on it that I had either gotten for free or bought at the BSSF auction. I started going to the club meetings in April of 2002 after seeing the spring bonsai display at the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show. As far as I can tell, I only now have two trees that I had at that point – my small Japanese maple, and a little scrub oak.

That little maple has grown a little, and really looks a lot more like a bonsai now than it did back then. Here’s an older shot and a more recent one.

For as much as this maple has grown, in the same time I’ve gone from a few trees in my back yard to over a hundred and a lot of much better material. I do keep the maple though since it was the first tree I ever turned into a bonsai and my father gave it to me.
