3/27/2007 Well, howdy doody, Bryce turned two-dy. We've been busy with school, bonsai and the like for the past few months and having fun at it. Dory and I decided not to have a large party for Bryce's birthday, but on the actual date I was feeling a bit bad because all he had gotten was a couple presents. So I made some yellow cake cupcakes which he absolutely loves and we gave him a couple candles on one of them.
Dory's mom came to town for the four days following Bryce's birthday. I was rather busy this past weekend with the annual show of the Bonsai Society at the Cow Palace. I was there all day Saturday and on Sunday evening to take down the exhibit. Dory and Susan spent much of the time shopping for Bryce, he ended up with quite a few new clothes and toys; even without a party he made out fine. Next week my mom will be coming down, so he'll get even more presents then. She never seems to show up at the house without at least two gifts for him. And since she comes about once a month I pretty much don't have to buy toys for Bryce.
I have a lot of things that I should be getting done lately and I seem to be putting them all on the back burner so that I can pursue more bonsai tasks. I should be finishing various projects around the house including trim, painting, and a bunch of things I can't even remember. I have had the most likely futile idea that I am going to start a nursery. When I bought a book called "So you want to start a nursery" and read through it I was discouraged to find that according to the author, a one-man nursery can gross about $50,000 per year and that a typical nursery has a profit margin of 15%. That means that I can make more money by doing a couple photo research projects than by working full time all year making plants....so maybe I should rethink my idea.
Regardless, I can't shake the idea that I can and would enjoy making money from bonsai. I don't know if it would ever replace the income that Dory produces but perhaps in a few years if we moved out of the city to somewhere cheaper it would provide enough income.
